Dr Kumar was born in Canada and raised in England by his father (an Indian physician) and his mother (an English nurse). He attended grammar schools in Brighton and Canterbury until the age of 12, when his family emigrated to the United States.

He grew up in Encinitas where he attended San Dieguito High School and finished in the top 1% of his class.  He was accepted at UCLA as an undergraduate where he studied physiology and earned his bachelor degree in 1998. Following college he spent a short time teaching mathematics as a high school teacher in Culver City, California. He was then accepted to the UCLA School of Public Health for graduate studies, where he worked towards a Masters Degree in Biostatistics.

He was accepted to the UCSD School of Medicine in 2000 with a prestigious Deans Scholarship. It was during medical school that he became interested in pursuing a career in pain management, after doing clinical pain research with his career mentor, Dr. Mark Wallace of the UCSD Pain Clinic. He received his medical degree from the UCSD School of Medicine in 2004.

He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, and then completed an Anesthesia Residency at UCSD. He then went on to specialize in Pain Management, completing an interventional pain and spine fellowship at the UCSD Pain Clinic.

Dr Kumar has been a practicing medicine since 2004 and practicing pain management since 2009.   He is considered by most neurosurgeons, spine surgeons, and colleagues in his field to be the leading pain specialist in San Diego. He has been named Top Pain Management Physician multiple times by the San Diego County Medical Society. He is proud to live in and serve the San Diego community.
