What is Kyphoplasty?
Kyphoplasty (vertebral augmentation) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to stop pain from a spinal compression fracture.
Spinal Compression fractures can occur from trauma such as a slip and fall, but also occur spontaneously. As we get older, our bone density decreases (osteopenia/osteoperosis) putting us at at higher risk of suffering a compression fracture.
Simple Procedure
Kyphoplasty is a simple procedure of injecting bone cement into the fracture. Before placing the cement, a void is made in the vertebral body using a balloon or cannula. That void is then filled with cement. Studies have shown vertebral augmentation (kyphoplasty) to be 90% effective at reducing or eliminating pain almost immediately.
